Air Conditioner
Directed by Fradique
Angola
2020, 72 min
Air conditioners mysteriously fall from the windows of buildings in this magical-realist tale set and shot in the bustling capital city Luanda. The story focuses on an old labyrinthine building and its inhabitants–among them Montacedo, the building’s security guard and factotum; Zezinha, a maid; and her demanding boss, a doctor, who owns one of the broken air conditioners and insists it be repaired. This chore falls to Montacedo, who takes it to the repair shop of the magical, mad-scientist-like Mr. Kota Mino, where deep in his basement Angolans can recover memories of their country’s tragic past and its future promise. Aline Frazoa’s original percussive soundtrack provides the perfect accompaniment to this enigmatic, dream-like film.
In Portuguese with English subtitles.
