Souad
Directed by Ayten Amin
Egypt
2021, 96 min
The film is a compassionate coming-of-age tale about 19-year-old Saoud and her younger sister Rabab, who try to reconcile what’s expected of them with what they expect of life. While their real lives are tightly conscribed, social media opens up a whole new world of exciting possibilities, especially for Souad, who searches for identity and love online. There, she meets and falls in love with Ahmed, an older man with a professional career generating online video content. After a cataclysmic tragedy devastates Souad’s family, Rabab is left to navigate the anguished aftermath. Trigger warning: suicide occurs off-screen.
In Arabic with English subtitles.
