Feathers
Directed by Omar El Zohairy
Egypt
2021, 112 min
Feathers is a comedic and biting social drama that takes a hard look at patriarchy and reveals a lot about women and Egyptian society. It tells the story of a long-suffering mother of three whose authoritarian husband, a factory worker, is turned into a chicken by the magician at their son’s birthday party. The magician is not able to undo his trick. Feathers is less a tale of revenge than of dawning self-worth as well as a radical reinterpretation of the meaning and inference of the term “hen-pecked.”
In Arabic with English subtitles. (Some disturbing images.)
