Burkinabé
Directed by Nthato Mokgata, Carla Fonseca
Burkina Faso, South Africa
2019, 75 min
Burkinabé is an unusual South African-West African film collaboration. The film’s directors are from South Africa, with Carla Fonseca playing the role of Mariam, while the film is set in Burkina Faso and the rest of the actors are from West Africa. Mariam, who is critically ill, returns to her homeland to reconnect with her family and her roots before she dies. Moussa, a charismatic bike messenger and taxi driver, helps her in her quest, but before this happens, we become completely immersed in his unruly life in Ouagadougou.
In English, French and Diola with English subtitles.
