The Boda Boda Thieves is the latest film by Donald Mugisha, whose earlier film Divisionz screened at the 20^th CFAF in 2010. This film is his Ugandan homage to the classic Italian neorealist film The Bicycle Thief (1948) by Vittorio De Sica. A boda boda is a motorcycle taxi and is the only way to get around in Uganda. The term originates from the English words “border-to-border” and is also a metaphor for finding a way around obstacles. The film is about a small family eking out a living in one of the ghettos of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city: a father, mother and their 15-year-old son Abel, who some years ago left their rural village in the footsteps of thousands of other villagers from around the country in search of a better life in the city. They have not had an easy time of it. When Abel’s father sustains an injury as a boda boda driver, he is forced to turn over the keys to his inexperienced son so he can earn money for the family to live on and, more importantly, to continue paying the debt they owe on the boda boda. Things soon go very wrong.
