WHY ARE THEY HERE? CHINESE STORIES IN AFRICA
Directed by Yara Costa
Ghana, Lesotho, Mozambique, 2011 , 35 min.
Why Are They Here? Chines Stories in Africa focuses on Chinese immigrants in Africa. While Chinese immigrants have always lived in Africa in the past, hundreds of thousands have come to the continent in recent years, with more on their way, hoping to open small businesses and to prosper. However, their lives don’t always turn out as they expected. Director Yara Costa focuses her camera lens on encounters between Africans and Chinese in three different countries: a tiny village in Lesotho; an isolated island in Mozambique; and Accra, the bustling capital city of Ghana.
