FOR THE BEST AND FOR THE ONION!

Directed by Elhadj Magori Sani

Niger, 2008 , 52 min.

For the Best and For the Onion! captures the rhythms of agricultural life in Niger, where Galmi purple onions, prized throughout West Africa, are grown. Shot over the course of one growing season in director Elhadj Magori Sani’s home community, the film shows how the vagaries of the global market price and harvest can affect the most intimate personal decisions. Young Salamatou has been waiting to wed for two years. Her father, Yaro, keeps postponing the wedding date until he has enough money from the sale of his Galmi onion crop to provide the wedding he wants for his daughter. When the market price of onions spirals downward, the young couple comes up with a creative solution to speed the arrival of their wedding day.

In Hausa with English subtitles.
