Winnie Madikizela Mandela (1936-2018), who fought on the front lines against apartheid in South Africa during her husband Nelson Mandela’s 27-year imprisonment, was one of the most misunderstood and intriguingly powerful contemporary female political figures. While her husband served a life sentence, paradoxically kept safe and morally uncontaminated, Winnie Mandela rode the raw violence of apartheid. She served as the figurehead for the ANC in South Africa when all other prominent leaders were imprisoned or in exile, and never allowed the government to silence her voice despite their unrelenting surveillance, harassment, imprisonment, torture, and banning to remote areas for years at a time. Her rise and seeming fall from grace bear the hallmarks of epic tragedy. This is the untold story of the forces that combined to take her down, labeling him a saint and her, a sinner.
