24th Annual Cascade Festival of African Films

Directed by Apolline Traoré

Burkina Faso, 2012 , 102 min.

Women Filmmakers Week with Film Director Apolline Traoré

Zaphira is a young widow who lives with her seven-year-old daughter in a rigid, tradition-bound village. She’s unhappy with her environment and desires a better life for her daughter. One day, she comes across a fashion magazine filled with pictures of slender, lovely young women. She has a revelation: Her daughter will be a model, just like them. In a village where this profession is unknown, Zaphira will do anything it takes to make her dream come true, whatever the odds. In a powerful performance by Mariam Ouédraogo (which won her the Best Actress award at FESPACO 2013), we see just how far this single-minded woman is willing to go. In Djoula and French with English subtitles. \

We are honored to have film director Apolline Traoré (whose film Under the Moonlight showed at the 18th CFAF in 2008) to present and answer questions about her film on March 1, the festival’s closing night.
