Women Filmmakers Week

The term papicha is slang for a hip, pretty girl. Inspired by real events in the late 1990s during the Algerian Civil War, Papicha tells the story of Nedjma, a young student who is fiercely feminist and passionate about fashion design. She and her friends decide that, despite the bans, they must continue to follow their dreams and put on a fashion show. An intense threat of escalating violence builds in the film as religious hard-liners close in on the female students to punish them for their alleged immorality.

(Note:some violent imagery.)

In Arabic and French with English subtitles.
