For over 30 years the festival has been sponsored by African and Black-owned businesses in the Portland metro area. As we continue to rebuild our communities (post-pandemic), we would like to invite you to continue your support of African restaurants, artisans, and shops. Throughout the festival, you can engage with vendors in person during our Friday and Saturday film screenings. Dr. Fokas Nchimbi is a veteran Swahili instructor with over 25 years of experience. He has taught Swahili at the University of Dar es Salaam and for the U.S. Peace Corps in Tanzania, facilitating language learning via a communicative approach that combines cultural knowledge with linguistic knowledge. His former students \u2013 several of them with links to Portland \u2013 have developed deep relationships with Swahili-speaking peoples and places, and have had numerous successes in fields such as diplomacy, academia, and literary translation. He has also taught by Zoom to people in various parts of the world with a comfortable schedule. Remote instruction and in-person homestay instruction in Tanzania are available.
