{"id":1016,"date":"2011-01-10T08:21:05","date_gmt":"2011-01-10T16:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.africanfilmfestival.org\/"},"modified":"2018-01-13T09:59:40","modified_gmt":"2018-01-13T17:59:40","slug":"festival-highlights","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.africanfilmfestival.org\/2018\/festival\/festival-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"Festival Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Opening Night Film: <a href=\"\/2018\/festival\/films\/76\/\"><i>&#8217;76<\/i><\/a> with visiting Nigerian filmmaker <a href=\"\/2018\/festival\/festival-highlights\/artist-biographies\/\">Izu Ojukwu<\/a> and Afrobeat Dance Party<\/strong> on Friday, February 2 at the Hollywood Theatre, with film screenings at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., followed by a &#8217;70s Afrobeat Dance Party at 11:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symposium on Cheikh Anta Diop of Senegal, arguably Africa&#8217;s greatest scholar of the 20th century:<\/strong> The documentary film <a href=\"\/2018\/festival\/films\/kemtiyu-cheikh-anta\/\"><em>Kemtiyu: Cheikh Anta<\/em><\/a> will be followed by a panel discussion with local academics on Saturday, February 3 in a matinee screening at 2 p.m. at PCC Cascade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Co-screening with the 6th Portland Black Film Festival and the 28th Cascade Festival of African Films of the documentary film <a href=\"\/2018\/festival\/films\/footprints-of-pan-africanism\/\"><em>Footsteps of Pan Africanism<\/em><\/a> (USA\/Ghana, 2016, 78 min.) directed by Shirikiana Aina Gerima, on Sunday, February 11, 2 p.m., at the Hollywood Theatre.<\/strong> The film revisits the era of Ghanaian independence and the American Civil Rights Movement from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Special appearance by <a href=\"\/2018\/festival\/festival-highlights\/artist-biographies\/\">Dr. Bassem Youssef<\/a>, known as the &#8220;Jon Stewart of Egypt&#8221; and named one of Time magazine&#8217;s &#8220;100 Most Influential People,&#8221;<\/strong> at the screening of <a href=\"\/2018\/festival\/films\/tickling-giants\/\"><em>Tickling Giants<\/em><\/a>, the documentary film about his life, on Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at PCC Cascade.
