This film is his Ugandan homage to the classic Italian neorealist film <em>The Bicycle Thief<\/em> (1948) by Vittorio De Sica. A <em>boda boda<\/em> is a motorcycle taxi and is the only way to get around in Uganda. The term originates from the English words \u201cborder-to-border\u201d and is also a metaphor for finding a way around obstacles. The film is about a small family eking out a living in one of the ghettos of Kampala, Uganda\u2019s capital city: a father, mother and their 15-year-old son Abel, who some years ago left their rural village in the footsteps of thousands of other villagers from around the country in search of a better life in the city. They have not had an easy time of it. When Abel\u2019s father sustains an injury as a <em>boda boda<\/em> driver, he is forced to turn over the keys to his inexperienced son so he can earn money for the family to live on and, more importantly, to continue paying the debt they owe on the <em>boda boda<\/em>.
