The oppressive regime of Daniel arap Moi is narrated by the teenager, who is in the midst of her teenage turmoil. A more mature narrator comes of age with the election of President Mwai Kibaki in 2002, but after the disputed election results in December 2007 and the violence that ensues, she is left to wonder if democracy ever truly comes of age.
