One of the greatest of African filmmakers, Gerima is also an outstanding social critic and teacher.\u00a0 He opened our fifth festival in 1995 with his landmark film, <em>Sankofa<\/em>, and it was a remarkable evening with a huge audience. We expect the same this year at our 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>South African Actor\/Director John Kani Comes for Week 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The veteran South African actor\/playwright John Kani has just released his first feature film, <em>Nothing But The Truth<\/em>, and is bringing it to Portland. His film was awarded the Silver Stallion, the second-place\u00a0prize (after Gerima\u2019s <em>Teza<\/em>), at last year\u2019s FESPACO.\u00a0 He\u2019ll be with us to present the film and discuss what it has to say about exile, identity, and family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anglo-Ghanaian Director George Amponsah Brings His Film About Boxing for Week 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>George Amponsah,\u00a0director of the\u00a0documentary, <em>The Fighting Spirit<\/em>, will be with us during the fourth week of the festival. He\u00a0will answer questions about his documentary methods\u00a0and ways in which this film treats the universal dream of sport as a means to fame and a better life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9phine Ndagnou Comes for Women Filmmakers Week &#8211; Week 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paris has always been a special magnet for young people in Francophone Africa, and the dream of leaving Africa for a life of success and sophistication in Paris has been the subject of many African films.\u00a0 Nowhere is this more true than in this new film by\u00a0Jos\u00e9phine Ndagnou from Cameroon, who will come to Portland to present <em>Paris Or Nothing<\/em> (in which she also plays the lead character).\u00a0 We are very excited to have this dynamic young filmmaker with us for our final week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>StudentFest Returns with Two Films <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>StudentFest presents films with special appeal to students of high school and college age in a matinee program.\u00a0 This year\u2019s StudentFest will be at noon on Thursday, February 18.\u00a0 The first film, <em>Adios Momo<\/em>, is from Uruguay; in it, an Afro-Uruguayan boy learns important life lessons from people who befriend him during the Uruguayan Carnival. The second, <em>Divizionz<\/em>, is set in the hip-hop world of Uganda\u2019s capital city of Kampala.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Family Film Day<em> <\/em>at<em> <\/em>the McMenamins <\/strong><strong>Kennedy<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>School<\/strong><strong> with Baba Wagu\u00e9 Diakit\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Family Film Day will be on Saturday, February 20, 2 p.m., at McMenamins Kennedy School.
