COMING OF AGE
Directed by Judy Kibinge
Kenya, 2007, 12 min.
Coming of Age, made for the “Why Democracy?” series, explores the development of Kenyan democracy as seen through the eyes of a Kenyan girl as she grows up. The naïve post-independence euphoria under Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta, is reflected in her youthful innocence. The oppressive regime of Daniel arap Moi is narrated by the teenager, who is in the midst of her teenage turmoil. A more mature narrator comes of age with the election of President Mwai Kibaki in 2002, but after the disputed election results in December 2007 and the violence that ensues, she is left to wonder if democracy ever truly comes of age. In English.
